Tour My Town -- OKC

By Carolyn B. Leonard

East Side West Side all around our town - OKC -- there is lots to see and do.  It is a best kept secret that Oklahoma City  (population 1.2 million) is a great vacation destination.

We have a professional symphony orchestra that plays the sweetest music this side of heaven, and also a pro-ballet troupe and pro-musical theatre ranked in the top ten of the nation (USA Today), and our OKC zoo is one of the top 12. We have two public and four private universities in OKC area with a combined enrollment of sixty thousand, claiming five national football championships and more merit scholars than any other university.

The annual RED EARTH Native American festival in June opens with a grand parade, unlike any other parade in the world, featuring hundreds of participants in authentic tribal regalia, drum groups, tribal princesses, floats, bands and other participants. Many events are free.

Oklahoma produced more Astronauts than any state and probably more country music stars. Our OK favorite sons include Will Rogers, Garth Brooks, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and many more who achieved stardom, and they each have a museum. (Remember: It ain’t braggin’ if it is true.)

Here’s my top ten OTHER things to see & do while you are here:

1. Ya Gotta Visit: The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum!

2. For dining and nightlife you can’t beat our riverwalk and canal boat rides in Bricktown:

3. World’s largest collection of Dale Chihuly’s stunning world famous handblown glass art at the small but inviting OKC Museum of Art:

4. Visitors rated #1 the OKC National Memorial and Museum, with it’s lighted chairs for each person and child killed in the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building (free)

5. Click here for the Smithsonian quality OK History Museum:

  1. 6.The town that time forgot - GUTHRIE - about 30 minutes north of OKC like stepping back into the early 1900s, and almost everything is free even the parking.

7. Take a free side trip along old Route 66 through our state, thanks to the folks at

8. The Rose Rock Museum at Noble, OK:

9. Green Dragon Herbals at Norman, OK:

  1. 10.Rodeo! Hold on tight  for one of the many Oklahoma rodeos held across the state, almost every weekend. The International Finals Rodeo in January features the World Championship.
