Tour My Town -- OKC

By Carolyn B. Leonard

East Side West Side all around our town - OKC -- there is lots to see and do.  It is a best kept secret that Oklahoma City  (population 1.2 million) is a great vacation destination.

We have a professional symphony orchestra that plays the sweetest music this side of heaven, and also a pro-ballet troupe and pro-musical theatre ranked in the top ten of the nation (USA Today), and our OKC zoo is one of the top 12. We have two public and four private universities in OKC area with a combined enrollment of sixty thousand, claiming five national football championships and more merit scholars than any other university.

The annual RED EARTH Native American festival in June opens with a grand parade, unlike any other parade in the world, featuring hundreds of participants in authentic tribal regalia, drum groups, tribal princesses, floats, bands and other participants. Many events are free. http://www.redearth.org/red-earth-festival/

Oklahoma produced more Astronauts than any state and probably more country music stars. Our OK favorite sons include Will Rogers, Garth Brooks, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and many more who achieved stardom, and they each have a museum. (Remember: It ain’t braggin’ if it is true.)
